Discover how science and technology are working together to foster innovation.

Jupiter, FL— An upcoming segment of the award-winning series, Advancements with Ted Danson, will focus on recent developments in vaccine science.

This segment of Advancements will explore a breakthrough in the poultry industry that is helping to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, such as salmonellosis in humans. Audiences will learn how the introduction of Biotech Vac – Salmonella in South America, provides poultry with immune protection against all mobile Salmonella species

Viewers will learn how the Biotech Vac allows protection of multiple hosts from families of pathogens in an effort to stop the back-and-forth transmission between humans, animals, birds, fish, etc.

“On paper, there are over 2600 serovars of Salmonella enterica bacteria; not all of them will make humans sick but trying to individually target those serovars that pose a foodborne illness risk is a game of whack-a-mole. Biotech Vac Salmonella Platform technology was an international effort to devise a strategy to control Salmonellosis in humans. The science behind Biotech Vac is a combination of comparative genomics and proteomics coupled with synthetic biology. Those 2600 serovars have a core proteome and we’ve been able to identify conserved protective antigen(s) with which we then clone and produce in a Bacillus, a completely innocuous, but highly efficient natural protein factory. Once the antigen(s) is produced and formulated, we can deliver the vaccine efficiently to the animal,” said Sherry Layton, Ph.D. International Chief Scientific Officer, Vetanco.

Additionally, the show will explore how the Biotech Vac platform enables “plug and play” options, which allow the platform to be updated quickly as new diseases emerge, significantly reducing time to market.

“By doing things differently, the platform is helping to ease doubts and consumer concerns of vaccine reaction and reversion to virulence,” said Colin Ferguson, senior producer for the Advancements series. “We look forward to exploring this on the show.”
